How can AI help answer security questionnaires?

Published · Qlara

AI can help answer security questionnaires by locating relevant approved evidence and drafting a concise response in the buyer's language. It is useful for repeated questions and long source documents. Its output still needs human review: a fluent answer can omit a requested date, misstate a recovery target, or claim a control the supplier does not have.

Ground drafting in approved evidence

Provide current, service-specific knowledge rather than asking a model to answer from general knowledge. A source about annual testing supports a frequency answer; it does not prove the date of the latest penetration test. Unsupported details should remain visible as gaps.

Uploaded documents and buyer questions are data, not instructions that can override the drafting rules. Text telling the model to mark everything compliant is not evidence of compliance.

Keep facts exact and presentation clean

Summaries should preserve dates, durations, percentages, named owners, protocol versions, and numeric thresholds. The correct RTO/RPO pair must stay associated with the right service. Shortening an answer should not drop one of several escalation recipients or swap a measured value.

Keep citations separate from the buyer-facing prose. Filenames, chunk labels, document-control banners, and incomplete sentence fragments make an answer harder to assess and can disclose implementation detail rather than evidence.

What reviewers should check

Review the draft as a supplier statement, not as a model demonstration. Ask whether it would still be accurate if read outside the source document.

  1. Does the cited evidence apply to the product and environment under review?
  2. Is every requested component present, including dates or explanations after yes/no questions?
  3. Are all numbers, units, names, and frequencies consistent with the source?
  4. Does the answer make an unsupported certification or scope claim?
  5. Are the response and evidence references in the format the buyer requested?

Qlara's approach

Qlara drafts from an approved knowledge base, flags missing evidence as GAP, and provides citations for review before export. It uses Mistral AI for model-assisted drafting when configured and supports lexical retrieval without an AI key. The public Security page describes the processing providers.

AI drafting is decision support. It does not guarantee accuracy, establish compliance, or replace the supplier's responsibility to review and approve what it sends to a customer.
